Who are we?

We are a progressive, independent veterinary practice based in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties; taking a proactive, preventative approach in all aspects of large animal veterinary work including numerous dairy, beef, sheep and milking goat units. Our team of 20 vets, all strive to deliver an excellent service to our clients and are committed to supporting the next generation of vets. 

What will you gain?

• 4 weeks of extensive experience in a busy, progressive farm practice, including dairy, sheep, beef and milking goat clients

• FREE accommodation

• Use of an ultrasound scanner to develop your pregnancy diagnosis skills

• Hands-on practical experience, including:

  • Castrations

  • Blood sampling

  • Calf disbuds

  • Goat disbuds, lambing, calving (as seasonally appropriate)

• Large animal surgical experience including caesareans, LDAs, and Vasectomies (as seasonally appropriate)

• One farm project, run and completed by you, covering topics such as:

  • Mastitis

  • Lameness

  • Pneumonia

  • Housing reviews

• Seminars – Opportunity to attend Practice seminars and Clinical Clubs

• Opportunities to attend farmer meetings and to contribute to our newsletter ‘A Diary of an Extern’

• A dedicated team of vets to follow your progress and ensure you achieve your goals

Who can apply?

The externship is open to penultimate and final year veterinary students with:

• A keen interest in production animal health

• Ambition to pursue a career in the farm veterinary sector
